Our Music Education program is a highly demanding and highly rewarding program. Your love for music will be deepened through the challenging instruction and personal commitment of Music Department faculty who are dedicated to your success. For example, faculty members can offer you private lessons in voice, piano, woodwinds, brass, violin, and viola.
This program integrates an education in music with an education of its Creator. As believers, we recognize music’s highest purpose is that of bringing glory to God. To effectively communicate this view in a classroom, you must be prepared with a strong biblical foundation. Through our Music Education program, you will be stretched and encouraged intellectually, personally, and spiritually, all while preparing for future ministry.
Core courses
We give you a strong foundation to understand and apply biblical truth through 42 hours of Bible and theology courses. A required set of General Studies courses supplements that foundation and enables you to consider the world in which you will minister.
You will then build on this foundation with over 40 credit hours studying the specific disciplines of your field and determining how you can best apply your unique strengths, gifts, and abilities. The core courses of this program include the following:
Advanced Conducting
Applied Music Major I-VII
Applied Music Secondary
Conducting
Counterpoint
Group Vocal Technique
Instrumental Composition and Arranging
Instrumental Methods I-II
Methods of Teaching Music K-8
Music Ensemble I-IV
Musicianship I-IV
Survey of Music History I-II
Teaching Methods in Music
Making the program your own
You will find multiple avenues for developing both your God-given musical abilities and your teaching skills. Touring groups include the Wind Ensemble, Chamber Singers, and Concert Chorale. Each group performs on and off-campus in various forums.
BBC recently chartered a collegiate chapter of Music Educators National Convention. This allows our Music Education students to have access to current events and trends in music education nationwide.
Many options after graduation
You will graduate having completed coursework equivalent to a double major in Bible and Music Education, and will be awarded a B.S. in Bible.
The Music Education program encompasses grades K-12, giving you the option of teaching at the elementary, middle school, or high school level.
You will receive certification from the Association of Christian Schools International to teach Social Studies in grades 7-12. You will also be eligible to apply for Pennsylvania state certification, which will allow you to teach in public schools. The state of Pennsylvania shares certification reciprocity with many other states, most likely enabling you to teach in the state of your choice.
Our program will also qualify you to become a private studio teacher. You will also be prepared to continue your education at the graduate school level. BBC Music Education graduates have been accepted at graduate schools such as Westminster Choir College, Temple University, and Eastern Michigan University.
What they say
“Due to small class size, intense projects, and practice requirements, the students and faculty of the music department become a close family. The professors take an interest in their students and do all they can to help prepare them for life after college.”
- Jenean Truax, BBC graduate
“The most beneficial aspect of BBC’s Music Education program was the opportunity to participate in the music groups. I was able to learn from fantastic teachers who were doing the very thing I was dreaming of doing. The professors inspired me to be the best that I could be.”
- Krista VanFossen, BBC graduate, Teacher at Center Academy, Jacksonville, FL
